This is my blog, which I finally got around to starting.I was too lazy to think of another name for it,other than referencing the famous The Clash song.I'll try to keep this updated though it took me this long to even get around to starting it so...we'll see.My goal is two posts a week but my realistic goal is a post a week.
So now I have been in London as a student for a week. It's been a VERY long and up and down week, due to the fact that I was quite lonely for most of it.I was having some trouble making lasting connections with people - but luckily, around Thursday, things took a turn for the better and I've had a great last few days.Tomorrow classes start - I'm taking: Creative Writing Drama,Elizabethan Shakespeare,Americans in London and Paris,and...a very random Modernism in Australia.I had a hard time working out my schedule and I'm hoping to make a final switch of seminars that will leave me with Fridays off (I already have Tuesday off).
I'm living in Wolfson House,a very ugly building in a very nice location.I live next to the London Bridge Station and across from an AMAZING market called Borough Market.I walked through there with some people and it makes you want to buy every single item sold.I live on the 4th floor with almost all nursing freshmen, some of who are really sweet. It's interesting finding out the differences between Brits and Americans.Generally, coming here,I didn't think there would be many since we speak (kind of) the same language but there are many differences I never knew about from vocabulary ('water wings' = 'arm bands', 'band aids' = 'plaster', 'pants' = 'ladies underwear') to television (I was introduced to a teen show 'The In Betweeners which is WAY too racy to ever make it on American television) to just general attitudes (drinking is part of the culture here in a way it is totally not in the US).
So far,I've met alot of American study abroad students who are all really nice.Hopefully,I'll meet some Brits in my year too when I start classes this week.
This post is very unorganized so I'll just leave you with a small list of things I've done this past week:
- Went to the Tate Modern Art Museum, made it through half of the British Museum before getting overwhelmed, and my favorite so far the National Portrait Gallery
- Walked around alot, even finding a London Party Bus playing Lady Gaga!
- Took a trip down Oxford Street, the main shopping area and searched around the epic Top Shop that is like twice the size of the Soho one (Didn't buy anything - I shopped vicariously through the people I was with)
- Learned to get to classes I can either take the Tube to school or walk a very pretty 30 min walk across the bridge
- Drank blue alcohol
- Bought tickets to see Henry IV at The Globe!
(and many more things)
Ideally,my posts will be much more focused than this one but here are a few pictures!
Covent Gardens! A wonderful place of live music, restaurants, and shops - about 5 min from where I have classes!
The view from the bridge I walk across to get to class.I see you,London Eye!

The outside of the British Museum! I really could only make it through half of it because it's so overwhelming.

A Monet painting from the Tate Modern...could sit and look at this all day.

And finally,me and a hallmate dressed to go to a party where you have to wear an old school uniform...I did the best I could!
